Program Overview
Non-government organizations play an increasingly important role in all aspects of development. They are key actors in the world of politics, industry and commerce, influencing both development agenda and policy implementation. This course addresses the specific management development needs of NGO Managers. It is designed to develop the management competencies and analytical capabilities of NGO managers. It will help develop the key competencies and capabilities needed by those in management and leadership positions in both national and international NGOs.
This course will train students on positive affirmative action in development planning and practice to promote equality and justice. It also provides students with in-depth knowledge of various project management techniques and theories.
It features internship, field placement, and research project writing as part of the program with the objective of exposing students to the fundamentals as well as the core strategic tools in handling issues related to NGO and Civil Society management.
Main Objectives
The main objective of the course is to focus on managing NGOs/Civil Society and making them more effective in working for the poor and the disadvantaged. It is mostly targeted towards developing insight among the students who plan to work for non-profit organizations, NGOs and aid agencies. The course deals with the concepts NGO and civil society, the rise and growth of NGOs, managing NGO roles, managing NGO relationship, internal NGO management, and professionalism. Specifically, these courses:
- Strengthen participants understanding of the concepts of NGOs/Civil Society management and sustainable development.
- Empower students with the analytical skills and tools to effectively initiate monitor and evaluate development projects
- Provide solid foundation for advanced study leading to careers in different fields of Development and Management studies and
- Provide opportunities for inter-disciplinary specialization at Ph.D. level.
Target Population
The program targets qualified students studying in the universities and staff members of NGO establishments. The course is also designed for project planners, management staff, and trainers from government and private sector who are involved in planning and managing development projects.

PGD: one Academic Year (2 Semesters)
MSc.: 18 Months (3 Semesters)
Program Structure
The core, mandatory courses provide a uniquely insightful overview of the long term development of social science thinking about NGO and Civil Society; equip students with the ability to understand and put to work the most relevant approaches to the subject from across disciplines; and provide training in methodological matters. Students then choose from a range of options with strong relevance for civil society development, covering social movements; philanthropy and fundraising; international social policy analysis, and other bodies of knowledge within particular fields.
Methodology
The program will comprise of formal lectures, tutorials, field visits, practical field work, internship training, seminar presentations, report and project writing. Lectures will emphasize as much as possible on interactive and participatory learning.
Learning Outcome
Students will acquire knowledge in management strategies, project design and evaluation, and politics; other courses provide in-depth perspectives on such topics as alleviating hunger, advocating for human rights, advancing gender equity, understanding religion and development, climate change and promoting public health. PAID’s NGOCSO students will have the opportunity to develop experience through internships, both domestic and international, as well as the chance to build expertise in issues such as grant writing, education or health care that will serve them well following graduation.

- Knowledge to key concepts and theories in NGO and Civil Society Formation and Management.
- Good intellectual capacity for analytical knowledge in development.
Employment Opportunities
Graduates may gain employment in various sectors such as private, parastatal and government institutions. Other opportunities are also available in international organizations and NGOs, LSOs, CIGs, financial institutions, oil companies, embassies, and outsourcing agencies, among others.
