Description of the Programme
Both the master and the post graduate diploma programs are going to cover five major areas of study. These areas are international relations, armed conflicts and conflict resolutions, international law, international political economy and humanitarian and strategic studies. With the master program, the focus is on international relations, peace and conflict studies, whereas the post graduate diploma course will be focused more on humanitarian services. The courses on armed conflicts, conflict resolution and international law are meant for both the participants of the master program and the post graduate diploma program.
Aims and Objectives of the Course
As far as the African continent is concerned, the African Union in particular and the United Nations generally are in perpetual need of experts and trained personnel to work in the maintenance and promotion of international peace and security. The institute is running the above two programs to meet with this need. Some of the students in the programs have worked with the African Union and the United Nations, especially on the African continent. The aims and objectives of the programs are therefore to train students and to impart on them, the skills and knowledge needed to meet with the prerequisites of this job market.
The teaching methods are very interactive and participatory. They involve lectures, presentations, discussions, tutorials and simulations. Field trips are also organized to bring students in contact with the experts in the field. In addition to improve the students capacity in public speaking and advocacy, graduate seminars are organized to develop and to fine-tune their presentation skills.
The students will have access to career opportunities within the African Union, the United Nations Organization, within regional economic organizations, within both international and national non-governmental organizations and within states´ institutions.
